What are some fun and unexpected ways you can use your crypto?
Too often, digital currency is seen as a boringly serious (or seriously boring!) thing. Common thoughts that come to mind for those who don’t use it are that it’s confusing, only for investors, dangerous, or any other variety of other not-so-exciting things. This really couldn’t be farther from the truth.
While cryptocurrency is great to invest in, that’s hardly its only use. Keep in mind that crypto, like official legal tender, can act like money in certain situations (which is why they call it “currency” even though it’s not always accepted as such). But it can be used for a wide variety of purchases, and the options are only growing with the rise of digital currency’s popularity.
Let’s take a look at three of these options.
1. Streaming
One of the most prominent live-streaming platforms on the internet is Twitch. This site allows anyone to livestream video content, including gaming, art, education, or even just chatting with viewers. As of February 2020, Twitch has over 140 million users and a whopping 3.8 million streamers.
But what does this have to do with digital currency? Well, some Twitch live streamers make their whole living just doing Twitch.
This is only possible for two reasons:
- Subscriptions: Online viewers who enjoy streamers’ content can sign up for subscriptions that usually come with some kind of perk in exchange for a monthly fee.
- Donations: This is where the cryptocurrency comes in. Viewers on Twitch can send “tips,” or small amounts of money, directly to the streamer. Twitch has made it possible to “tip” streamers with a choice of four cryptocurrencies that go directly to the streamer’s digital wallet: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and Ethereum. The process is quick, safe, easy, and helps spread the use of cryptocurrency.

2. Movies

One of the more fun and noteworthy services seeing an increase in crypto use is good-old movie theaters. As one example, MovieTickets.com uses the payment processor Bitpay to allow you to purchase movie tickets from 900+ locations with Bitcoin. Or you can buy gift cards with bitcoin to spend at Fandango, Regal Cinemas, Edwards Theatres, United Artists Theatres and more.
3. Charity
Beyond the entertainment listed above, cryptocurrency can also be used to do more philanthropic activities. Various charity organizations have begun accepting digital currency as a means of donation. Care USA, Electronic Frontier, and Tony Hawk’s Skatepark Project, for example, allow donors to send digital currency directly to the cause.
