Places That Accept Bitcoin Payment, Online and Offline

We get asked a lot, “What can I do with Bitcoin? Where can I spend it?” And while the answer is, “a lot of places,” we want to put forth another idea … how about not spending it?

After all, maybe Bitcoin’s more beneficial as a store of value than a medium of exchange. A lot of people just buy it to hold it (or “hodl” it, in crypto slang) and don’t actually want to spend it. Others send it to family in other countries, since it’s borderless and can be transferred instantly.

But if you DO want to spend it on something instead of giving it away or waiting to see if the price goes up, we have quite a few options for you.

Websites

1. Technology

Microsoft was among the first companies to start accepting Bitcoin in 2014, but have gone back and forth several times since. Newegg, AT&T and Namecheap are other companies in the tech sector that welcome your BTC payments.

2. Finance

PayPal began accepting Bitcoin payment even before they announced the ability to buy and sell crypto on their platform. Shopify also offers storeowners the ability to accept Bitcoin payments from customers.

3. Home Décor

Overstock started accepting cryptocurrencies for purchase payments in 2017. You can spend bitcoin and three altcoins when shopping for home goods. Not only that, but the giant online retailer has a wholly-owned subsidiary that invests in blockchain tech companies.

4. Travel

Travel companies have traditionally been on the cutting edge with crypto, but times have changed. Expedia was the first to accept Bitcoin, but then stopped. Like Microsoft, we won’t rule out the possibility of a decision reversal though. CheapAir is still an option, and surely the growing crypto adoption will have others following suit again soon.

5. Food

The first bitcoin purchase was pizza, so of course food is an expected purchase opportunity. You can use bitcoin to buy subs at Subway. In Venezuela and Germany, you can have it your way (and pay your way) with bitcoin and some altcoins. And KFC had a “Bitcoin Bucket” promotion in Canada that let you order online for home delivery.

Brick-and-Mortar

More and more offline brick-and-mortar locations are also accepting cryptocurrency as payment, thanks to Bitcoin-enabled payment processors. Here’s the Top 5 we’ve found:

1. Car Dealerships

A lot of small and locally-owned car dealerships accept bitcoin as payment, with honorable mention going out to BMW dealers, who have often made a point of being crypto-friendly.

2. Movie Theatres

Hollywood’s got you covered! Large movie chains including Regal Theatres, AMC Theatres and Lionsgate accept bitcoin for admission as well as concession-stand treats. We’re assuming some smaller chains and niche cinemas do as well. And you can also use BTC to purchase tix in advance at Fandango and MovieTickets.

3. Jewelry Stores

We’re sure they’re not the only one, but REEDS Jewelers definitely invites your Bitcoin business. You can spend your crypto on their website or any REEDS location across the USA.

4. Bars and Restaurants

Hipster hangout Brewdog takes bitcoin, natch. Also check out the Killfish chain in Russia, EVR bar in New York, and probably lots of other cool joints that want to attract the trendy and tech-savvy.

5. Casinos

Well, duh. Coin Cloud was founded in Las Vegas, and we made sure local establishments knew the benefits of Bitcoin. You can spend it at modern hotspot The D Las Vegas Casino & Hotel, the vintage Golden Gate Casino and the upscale Aliante Casino and Hotel, among others.

These websites are connected, and while the payment methods are limited (just bitcoin, PayPal or credit card), the reported card selection wins first place. They claim to offer cards for 1100+ retailers, including Target, Home Depot, Starbucks, TJ Maxx, American Airlines, McDonald’s, CVS and many more. But the selection varies depending on what people have sold to the site.
